Overview
Tuxachanie Hiking Trail is a 13.8-mile long trail that traverses longleaf pine covered ridges, pitcher plant savannas and flooded tupelo/bald cypress swamps! From rows of live oaks planted at the trails entrance, the first 5 miles follow an old abandoned logging railroad which once served as the sawmill of Dantzler Lumber Company at Howison. Remains of the railroad trestles, built by Irish immigrants in the early 1900’s, are still visible on some of the creek crossing. Only foot travel permitted – parking area provided at the Highway 49 trailhead.
This is a non fee trail with no drinking water available along the trail. Trail maps are available for purchase at the Wiggins District Office. Operated by the United States Forest Service. Note: All National Forest Campgrounds do not allow alcohol.
Directions: Take Highway 49 to Saucier (Trailhead on Highway 49). -
